The RYA Powerboat Scheme is designed for the training needs of both recreational and professional powerboat operators, and is applicable to sports boats, RIBs, dories, launches and other boats, which do not normally provide accommodation or cooking facilities.

Powerboat courses are available seven days a week, on top of our scheduled courses – just contact us with your requirements.

We’ve worked with and trained students from the RNLI, SARA, CAVRA, South Wales Police, South Wales Fire & Rescue Service, Royal Navy, National Resources Wales, Maritime Volunteer Service, Cardiff Harbour Authority, Welsh Rowing, Cardiff International White Water, Cardiff Rivers Group, Cardiff Marine Group, Bristol Channel Pilots, local yacht clubs and RYA Cymru Wales.

The lower age limit for RYA powerboat courses is eight, but the RYA would not recommend under 16s being left in charge of a powerboat without direct adult supervision.

The RYA Powerboat Scheme is broken down as follows:

RYA Level 1
A one day course providing a practical introduction to boat handling skills.

RYA Level 2
The basis of the International Certificate of Competence, this two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed by a competent powerboat driver.

RYA Intermediate (Day Cruising)
A two day course that covers the practical use of piloting and passage planning by day on coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

RYA Advanced (Day and Night Cruising)
A two day and evening course that provides the skills and background knowledge needed by powerboat drivers operating by day or night in known or unfamiliar waters. It also runs through the skipper’s role and boat handling in more demanding conditions. This course includes a night exercise.

RYA Safety Boat
A two day course that provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, and for racing and training activities.
